ABOUT THE PAPAS

Moon Papas Art is a collaborative that creates electronics based sculpture focused on the integration of technology and material fabrication utilizing light, sound, motion, interactive sensors, and a wide array of materials and processes, both physical and digital, in the pursuit of creating possibility-stretching playful and inspiring environments, experiences, and objects.

Their work is able to be experienced around Houston at local bars such as Behind Closed Doors, Sixes and Sevens, The Flat, and several other restaurants, bars, and public spaces. Their custom fabrication also routinely contributes to parties and special events such as those hosted by the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, Southern Smoke, and various other local movers and shakers. and set building for Catastrophic Theatre.

They have a lot of fun.

Initially a duo, now a collective, Moon Papas Art has always been evolving, both their capabilities and their team.

Julian Luna, compelled by a lifelong interest in combining art and engineering, fomented by mentors-turned-peers in both fields from the Houston Art Car community, has been building and contributing to Art Cars since 2003 and working as a fabricator since 2012, through which he has developed a mastery of material based sculpture and fabrication. Matt Fries is a self-taught electronics specialist; his performance project from 2010 to 2016 playing electronic instruments of his own creation ultimately culminated in a shift towards interactive installations. The two have been collaborating since 2016, developing, adapting, and combining their skills. Boston Kassidy comes from a lengthy background in A/V production and DJing. He joined Luna and Fries in 2020 with a specialization in software and programming—ushering in a new level to Moon Papas Art’s technological possibilities. Their most recent member, Cam Rowe, a long-time local musician, sculptor/fabricator, and arts educator, who received an MFA from the University of Florida in 2019 wherein he focused on interactive musical instrument based sculpture, has intertwined his skills as a multidisciplinary artist and expertise in multiple material processes with the collaborative capabilities.

By combining their unique skill sets, they create mesmerizing sculptures and environments otherwise unachievable on their own—and that is pretty cool.
